DO YOU HAVE A LOVE OF WHITE OR A FEAR OF COLOUR?

You probably know someone (or you are that someone) who when it comes to choosing colours, freezes.

Whether it’s choosing curtains or a sofa, colour can seem overwhelming. So often through fear or safety, we can default to white or beige, instead of committing to a colour or a pattern. And before you know it, lots of things in your room are white.  While white is a classic, timeless choice and a great base to decorate a room, too much white can be a bit bland.  I decorated a room with this base and it went from a plain room to one that showcased all the collectables and antiques to make for an interesting and inviting room.  It has become the home owner’s favourite place to sit!  If you have been using white to avoid choosing colour or are surrounded by too much beige (hello 80’s), here is a step by step guide to help inject interest into your interiors:

1. White base – This is probably not an uncommon sight: white carpet, beige curtains, white sofa, white walls. You get the drift. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s a good base. But on its own, it’s a bit, well, white.

TIP – If you’ve got the time or budget, a relatively easy way to introduce colour is through changing the wall colour.

2. Add contrast – To balance with the white base, bring in some contrast with darker colours. Try using darker pieces such as side tables, lamps and occasional chairs.

TIP – A classic friend of white is black. So, if you are still a bit scared of colour, try black!

3. Texture, colour, pattern, repeat – This is where the comfort starts to come in. And this can change with the seasons or whenever you want to mix things up. Cushions, throws and rugs bring in softness, colour and texture.

TIP – Scared of spillages?  Adding throws or rugs can also help protect your sofa or cover marks.

4. Get personal – Bring in the things you love. Presents, trinkets from holidays, great grandmas’ antiques. Anything that is of meaning or beauty, bring it in! This way, there will be a talking point, a reminder of trips and people and things that make you feel special. This adds colour and more importantly, it’s what makes it your home rather than just a ‘cookie cutter’ house.

TIP – Try grouping similar objects and colours together for more impact.
