IS YOUR HOME A FASHION VICTIM?

Like wearable fashion, your home is also susceptible to trends.

We’ve all witnessed it – orange tiles in the 70’s, peach walls in the 80’s and pine furniture in the 90’s. Just because something is fashionable, doesn’t mean that you should buy into it. For example, I’m not going to dye my hair that grey colour that is becoming fashionable, when I’m trying to get rid of the real ones that keep appearing! And as much as I like stilettos, I know if I buy a pair, they will remain in my wardrobe because I’m really a flat shoes person. But how do you navigate the trends? How do you know if your choice is “trendy” or really suitable?

Here are some tips:

  • For me it all starts with how you want your home to feel. It may be that you want your home to feel relaxed, or cosy or feel like the holiday to Italy you recently had. By thinking about this, you will get closer to finding what works for your home.

  • If you are seeing a particular trend everywhere, chances are it is “trendy” and not going to be around for ever.

  • Do you like it because it is everywhere or because it fits in with how you want your home to feel?

  • Consider using a small trendy item in your home. For example a cushion is a lot easier to live with or move than a sofa that covered with the latest on trend fabric.

While I’m not saying to avoid these or throw them out, it’s good to be mindful of current trends when investing in your home. That’s were an interior decorator can help. A decorator or designer can help in navigating how to complete your home, according to your aesthetic, your family and your lifestyle.
