WHY A BEDHEAD IS LIKE ICING ON A CAKE
A bed isn't finished until it has a bedhead
I’ve baked a number of cakes – all variations of banana (I was given a lot of bananas). And a few times I’ve impatiently started to eat the cake before putting on the icing. But then I realised that the cake really needed the icing to finish it off. It made me think that bedheads are like that for a bed. For me a bed isn’t finished unless it has a bedhead. Recently I’ve worked on creating new bedrooms for my clients. For some, they hadn’t had a bedhead before and as a result, were amazed at the transformation that a bedhead made to their room.
I’ve put together some of my reasons why a bedhead is the icing for your bed (just don’t get crumbs in it)!
A bedhead anchors the bed. Without a bedhead, a bed can appear to float in the room, especially where your bedlinen and walls are similar colours. The bedhead defines the bed and becomes a focal point for your room because there is somewhere to rest your eye.
It offers support. If you like to have breakfast in bed (I wish!) or even read, it will help give you support. Pile up a few pillows and viola, you are ready for your cup of tea (English breakfast, milk, no sugar please).
It adds a contrast to your wall. By using colour, pattern and shape, you can therefore create more interest in your room. Bedheads can come in many different shapes and sizes such as rectangle, have curved edges or be a semi circle, just to name a few!
Bedheads can be fabric or timber. They can be high or low in height or even go beyond the width of your bed for a dramatic effect. They can be buttoned or have piping along the sides for a more elegant look. And some can even have rattan inserts (which one of my clients now has).
You don’t need a new bed. The good news is that bedheads can be added to an existing bed ensemble or base. Free standing bedheads can sit between your bed and wall. While other types can be attached to your wall.
And they can be custom made locally according to your requirements. Need help choosing or designing a bedhead? Need a banana cake recipe? To receive helpful tips and inspiration direct to your email inbox, please sign-up to receive my “All Things Interiors” newsletter.
