LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR BUT NOT THEIR INTERIORS

A while ago, I completed an interiors concept for a client. I drew up the layout plans, gave her a shopping list of items and sent her samples.

She loved the new ideas.  In her excitement, she showed her neighbour.  Anyway, from what I understand, the neighbour redid her living room in a very similar way and style (was it a coincidence?).  I think she even used the same colour for the sofa!

There’s that old saying that ‘imitation is the greatest form of flattery’.  And while we can’t stop our neighbour from buying a similar sofa or using your interiors as inspiration, it made me think that just merely copying something doesn’t mean that it’s your style. Or that it’s suitable for your home or your way of living.

Did the neighbour really like the interiors concept?  Did it have elements to reflect her lifestyle or was it just a copy?  To be fair, there are many people that I speak to who have an idea of what they like but they just don’t know how to put it all together.  Or they can’t see another way to use their space (especially when they have had it the same way for years).  Or they don’t have the vision or time to change their space.  Or they simply don’t have the time.

That’s where an interior decorator can help. Sure we want to help make your interiors beautiful but there’s a lot more that goes into designing a space.

Here are some of my steps to a considered space that reflects you, your style and your way of life:

  • How are you going to live in your room?

  • How do you want it to feel?

  • Who lives here? (don’t forget your dog!)

  • What are things you want to display?

  • What are you keeping?

  • Will the makeover sit comfortably with other rooms or elements?

  • Where does the light come from?

  • What is your budget?

There are things you simply can’t truly copy.  Not everything can be taken from the neighbour or bought on the internet or on the shop floor. Your home is about you.
