ARE YOU WATCHING TV OR IS YOUR TV WATCHING YOU?
For some, the TV takes pride of place in a living room, while others try to hide it or minimalise it.
Recently, we implemented a ‘no watching TV’ rule during the weekdays for our daughter. Somehow incidental TV watching had crept in. I think it happened when my daughter had the flu. She spent days resting on the sofa watching movies such as “High School Musical” in between taking naps and eating jelly beans. The flu went but the constant hum and flashes of light from the TV had become part of our family room and our family life.
It made me think about the role of TV in our lives and in our rooms. For some, the TV takes pride of place in a living room, while others try to hide it or minimalise it. And then there is the division of whether TVs should be in the bedroom or not (this may be for another blog). I do however, love watching TV at the end of the day, whether it’s a compelling mini series or a good movie. And TVs are now a lot more attractive and streamlined than their boxy ancestors. But what do we do with the TV when it’s not on? How do we incorporate the big black rectangle so it doesn’t dominate the room (or our lives?).
Here are some ideas to display your TV:
TV as art – new technology has meant that flat screen TVs can be mirrors or art works when not in use. Mount it on a wall, add a picture frame and the TV becomes the next Picasso!
Build it in – built in cabinetry and clever use of furniture can incorporate the TV so it does not look obvious in the room. Cabinetry can also be made to have sliding doors to conceal the TV when it is not in use.
Use paint – painting a wall a darker colour can also help the TV disappear into the surrounds.
Other distractions – putting shelving or art work around the TV can take the eye away from just focusing on the black screen when you enter a room.
