5 WAYS TO DECORATE WITH BOOKS
In the age of computers and technology, there is some thought that the paper book is on the way out.
While an ipad or a kindle is a very useful device (especially when you are watching your luggage allowance or are desperate to read the “sequel” but your holiday resort has no book shops), I still prefer a real book. Nothing can substitute for the feel of the pages, the satisfaction of seeing how much you’ve read or making a dog ear on a book before going to sleep. But when you finish a book, what do you do? You can donate it, give to a friend or put it away. Or, you can try one of my 5 ways to decorate with books:
Be spineless –Instead of displaying the coloured spine of a book on a bookshelf, turn the books around and display the pages. This is especially good if you just want a neutral look (or are a bit embarrassed about the books you’ve read!)
Colour by numbers – One of my favourites is to stack your books by colours. So blue books go with blue, red books, go with red… you get the idea. The rainbow effect looks great (but once you’ve committed, you’ve got to keep up the colour theme).
Stack them high – I can remember going to my aunt’s house and she used to lie books down horizontally and stack a few to create height and interest. And then she’d top it off with a photo or an ornament.
An oldie but a goodie – Old books are great to create a sense of history and interest. I have some at home and they are so old that their spines have fallen off. But the texture of the cover and the muted colours are fantastic.
Library style – Use ideas from a library to display books. I like to use kids books with great covers as a feature on a shelf. I either stand them up by themselves or put a few together on a shelf. And it will encourage the kids to love books!
