IS YOUR PLANT A FRIEND OR FAUX?

Until recently I wasn't very fond of indoor plants but little by little I'm liking them

I remember when I was a kid, my parents had indoor plants. In our rumpus room, there was a rather tall rubber plant in a wicker basket. There were also few maiden hair ferns scattered around the house, which despite looking lovely, didn’t last very long.

At the front door of my 1970’s family home, there was a huge monsteria plant (of course). It was so large that it started to bear fruit. These days it would be very sought after. But as a kid, I hated it. In fact, I pleaded with my parents to get rid of it. And after years of trying to tame it, it was removed.

I must admit that until recently I wasn’t very fond of indoor plants. But little by little, I’m liking them. In fact, I have some plants in my own home. And I’ve learned that for most plants, it’s all about position and watering that helps determine their longevity. Or is it?

That’s where I’ve discovered fake plants. And I’m loving them! Not all fake plants are created the same. But with careful selection and use, they can look just as good as the real thing but without the maintenance!

Where I’ve used faux plants

The balcony in the Malvern project was perfect for a faux garden. It was bare, small, a little overlooked and faced west. My clients had left their family home and established garden and while they didn’t want maintenance, they wanted some greenery and privacy. To help create the feeling of a haven and sanctuary.

A trellis of fake plants with UV resistance were used to cover the walls and were extended above the balcony wall. A faux buxus hedge was also used to create some interest and depth (and to hide the folding clothes dryer). An outdoor rug and furniture completed the area.

The balcony was an uninviting blank canvas

AFTER

Faux hedging was installed to create a welcoming space that my clients now want to spend time in
