HOW A DINING TABLE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD

A dining table may extend when the grandkids come over for a family dinner

Recently I was reminded of my aunt’s kitchen table. It was a round, slightly darkened glass table with four green velvet swivel chairs. This table was centred in the middle of the kitchen in her 1950’s house. While there was a more formal dining table nearby, this little round table got more love. It was the place to sit when you popped in for a visit. And a place to chat while relatives were getting ready for a celebration or just cleaning up. As a child it always felt like a cosy place; the centre of the house and a place to watch all the activity of family life.

When we think of a dining table, we often don’t think about how we want it to make us feel. We may know the colour, size and how many people we’d like it to seat. But what about the memories it can help create? It can hold a cup of tea while you solve the problems of the day and be a place to complete that dreaded algebra homework. It may be small when it is just and your spouse and then extend when the grandkids come over for a family dinner. And can it be a thing that helps you remember those days as a child watching your aunt do the dishes while the dogs barked in the backyard and the kettle whistled impatiently.
